Five Die in Car Wreck on I-65

Tragedy struck early yesterday morning when a pick-up truck hydroplaned on I-65 and crossed the median colliding with another vehicle. A family of three was in the pick-up truck on their way to the State Capitol to participate in a 4-H Club visit. All three in the pick-up truck died as a result of the collision. Two other people died in the other vehicle.

The Kentucky State Police is investigating and it appears that the wreck was due to the heavy rain conditions.

State Trooper Todd Holder said the northbound pickup driven by David McGrath hydroplaned, crossed the median and struck the Lawsons' southbound van. An 18-wheeler driven by Michael Giles, 48, of Philadelphia, Miss., and carrying steel rolls tried to avoid the collision and nearly hit the van head-on, Holder said.
"It's just tragic," Holder said. "It was just raining so hard that nobody could see."

97 Kentuckians Have Died in Car Crashes This Year

In less than two months, 97 people have died as a result of automobile accidents in Kentucky. Just last week 10 people died in car wrecks. Statistics as to the causes of these wrecks have not been released yet. Alcohol may have been a factor in one wreck. At this time of year, with the weather changing so much, it is even more important to be careful on the road. Be aware of freezing conditions as roads may appear to be fine, but areas may still have ice on them especially bridges and underpasses.

The wrecks, from Feb. 18 through Feb. 24, included a double fatality in Laurel County on Ky. 80 East and single fatalities in Butler, Christian, Grant, Jefferson, Leslie, Ohio, Warren and Washington counties.

Fatal Car Wreck

A woman died from multiple injuries sustained in an automobile accident on the Watterson Expressway in Louisville, Kentucky on Friday. Two semi tractor-trailers were also involved in the fatal crash. According to witnesses, she may have lost control of her vehicle and then was clipped by a tractor-trailer and subsequently hit by another when her vehicle ended up in its path.

Witnesses told police that Jenkins appeared to lose control of her vehicle and swerve to one side, where she was clipped by a tractor-trailer.
The impact sent her into the path of a second tractor-trailer, which crashed into her car and careened off the roadway, knocking down a concrete sound barrier on the side of the expressway, Russell said yesterday.
Jenkins was taken to University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 3:55 p.m., Taylor said.
The driver of the second tractor-trailer was taken to University with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening.

Speeding Leads to Crash and Death

A car accident earlier this week in Louisville, Kentucky resulted in the death of the female passenger. Police reported that before the wreck one vehicle was speeding excessively on the Watterson Expressway and the police tried to pull the car over, but the driver took an exit ramp. Moments later the vehicle was hit broadside by another vehicle at an intersection. Police reported that the female passenger died and both drivers were transported to the hospital.

The driver of the speeding vehicle had outstanding warrants.

Speed is a major factor in auto collisions. Drivers should reduce their speed on the roadway.

Bowling Green Police Officer Involved in Car Accident

Yesterday, a Bowling Green Police Officer collided with a vehicle being driven by an 18-year old at the intersection of Adams Street and 11th Avenue in Bowling Green, Kentucky. The Kentucky State Police will investigate the wreck. Whenever the City of Bowling Green's Police Department is involved in an automobile accident, the Kentucky State Policy handles the investigation in an attempt to avoid the appearance of bias. It appears the police officer was traveling on Adams Street responding to a call. She had her lights and sirens on. However, we do not know her speed and the other driver's line of sight prior to impact. The other driver sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to Vanderbilt.

Car and Ambulance Collide Resulting in Fatality

In Elizabethtown, Kentucky recently, a drunk driver collided with an ambulance transporting a patient who had just been involved in a different wreck. The driver of the vehicle was charged with DUI, reckless homicide, and four counts of wanton endangerment. The driver was arrested and put in jail. A passenger in the vehicle died at the scene. The driver's wife and the EMTs and patient in the ambulance sustained injuries. It appears that the driver pulled out into the path of the ambulance who had the right of way. It also appears that Hardin County is taking driving under the influence very seriously as it should. This wreck may have been avoided if it weren't for alcohol.

On a side note, if you hear sirens, slow down immediately and determine from which direction the emergency vehicle is approaching you. Then, carefully assess the situation and pull over out of the path of the emergency vehicle Even if you have the right of way at the intersection, stop and move out of the way. Once the emergency vehicle passes you, you need to reassess the roadway and make sure you still have the right of way to proceed as traffic signals may have changed.

Fatal car accident in Bowling Green

A three car wreck resulted in one death on Saturday, November 24, in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Three others sustained injuries in the collision. The injuries were serious enough that two individuals had to be flown to Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville and University Hospital in Louisville. An investigation as to the cause of the wreck is still pending. It appears the Kentucky State Police are handling the investigation.

Drunk Driver Indicted Regarding Car Accident Death

The grand jury in Carroll County indicted a man who allegedly drove while intoxicated causing a vehicle accident that killed another man. The indicted man apparently overcorrected his vehicle, crossed into another lane, and hit another vehicle. Both cars flipped and the indicted man's vehicle landed on top. The other driver died at the scene. Charges are for murder, criminal mischief and operating a motor vehicle under the influence.

Melvin Randall Snow, 53, of Ghent, was indicted on charges of murder, criminal mischief and operating a motor vehicle under the influence.
Last month, Snow was on U.S. 42 heading to his home at 1170 Sharon Road when he drove his Ford 250 truck onto a portion of the road that had uneven pavement. While driving on the uneven pavement, Snow hit two orange barrels, overcorrected his vehicle and traveled into the westbound lane where Hector Garcia Arteaga, 31, of Carrollton was driving, the police report said.
Snow's vehicle slid across Arteaga's silver 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse, causing both vehicles to flip. Snow's vehicle landed on a top of Arteaga's car. Both vehicles stopped on the north side of a culvert, near Growers Tobacco Warehouse in Carrollton.

Man Fled Scene, Motorcyclist Died

An inmate on work release from Louisville hit a motorcyclist in southern Indiana on September 8. Police told the press that the inmate should not have even been in southern Indiana. The inmate fled the scene and did not stay to offer help to the motorcyclist, who died as a result of the accident. Police have issued an arrest warrant for the inmate.

Police officer involved in auto accident(2)

A police officer was injured in an automobile accident last week in Louisville. A witness told the media that the officer either was distracted or could not handle the sharp turn. The witness also suspected the officer was speeding prior to the wreck. Another vehicle was involved, but no injuries reported.

"Something must've been going on with her being distracted or going at a rate of speed, she couldn't handle the turn," said Joe Meiman, who was working about 50 feet away.
Many people who live on New Lagrange road say it's not the first accident on this stretch of road, and they are worried about it happening again.
