The national average processing time for the month of March 2009 was 501 days, which is two days above January and February 2009. The cumulative average processing time for the first six months of fiscal year (FY) 2009 was 490 days, a lower number attributable to an average processing time of 479 dyas for October to December 2008, the first quarter of FY 2009. It appears that the processing time is creeping up after some months of improvement.

A growing problem appears to be getting case decisions by the Administrative Law Judges. The average time waiting for a decision to be written has increased. What do the numbers from the backlogs tell us?

- Average processing times are staying around 500 days.

- The number of pending hearings has dropped three months in a row.

- The number of hearings requested has increased about 10% this fiscal year.

- Dispositions are clearly up from last year.

- The number of decisions waiting to be written continues to climb. The number of decisions to be written per decision writer is also climbing.

- The number of cases pending to be pulled is dropping, with the number of days a case is waiting to be pulled at the lowest level in nearly five years.

The backlog continues to frustrate claimants and attorneys alike. Those applying for disability benefits often have little means to subsist while their claim is pending.

Information provided by the National Organization of Social Security Claimants' Representatives also known as NOSSCR.

Very sad that in such a time of need that people would be facing even longer wait times. Hopefully they will be able to find some relief soon.

This is all BS. try loosening regulations at the DDS level and allow earlier in the process.

I used to work at DDS before I began disgusted and left to represent clients in the private sector.

Many DDS employees--unfortunately, many supervisors--have been there for DECADES and their mindset is stuck in 1960s time warp. They refuse to change--even if change would mean better service and faster decisions for the claimants, many of whom are seriously ill. 2/3s of the DDS workers are not even necessary--their only "jobs" involve stamping or paper-clipping unnecessary, redundant forms. Many of them spend their days surfing the web, reading the paper, BSing, and taking 2-3 hour lunches. No accountability. If the public got a real look at what happens in these DDS offices, the Walter Reed vet scandal would pale in comparison. I finally quit in disgust after I was reprimanded for going over the head of a supervisor who took a three month vacation and left 50 cases to sit in her cube and collect dust--one of these cases mine, involving a gentleman with Stage 4 lymphoma. Supervisors told me I should have waited until her return before moving the case. At that point I was so disgusted with the culture of laziness, corruption, I just quit.

Two words: job security. These ridiculously long waiting periods and SSA-DDS inertia are created solely by obsession with maintaining the status quo and job security, nothing else.
