Comair Flight 5191 crashed shortly after take-off Sunday morning from Lexington, Kentucky's Blue Grass Airport. The flight, bound for Atlanta, carried 47 passengers and 3 crew members and was operated by Delta subsidiary Comair, based in Cincinnati. The crash of the Comair regional jet, a CRJ-200, marks the end of a the so-called "safe period" in U.S. aviation as the last major airline crash occurred in New York when an American Airlines flight crashed killing 265 in 2001.

The weather was overcast with light rain as the Comair flight crashed in a field approximately one mile from the airport. While the plane was reported to be largely intact, upon impact a major fire ensued. The number of fatalities is not known at this time, but at least one passenger survived and is being treated at a University of Kentucky hospital.
