Kentucky Doctors Are Not Leaving

Jennifer MooreSeptember 01, 2007 6:15 PMUntil recently, the Kentucky Board of Medical Licensure kept statistics on the number of physicians practicing in Kentucky on its website. For some reason, you can no longer obtain stats on the number of licensed doctors in Kentucky. For years, some politicians and the insurance industry have pushed for caps on damages and other tort reform methods. They have claimed that tort reform is needed because doctors are leaving Kentucky in large numbers. But, the truth says otherwise.
Data from the Kentucky Board of Medical Licensure's website showed an increase in the number of physicians in Kentucky from previous years:
-- In 2004, there were 9,051 licensed physicians with Kentucky practice addresses.
-- In 2005, there were 9,741 licensed physicians with Kentucky practice addresses.
This information on physicians is important to Kentuckians. However, the Board has removed it from its website now. The stats on licensed doctors should be easily accessible to the public. The Board should post the stats again.
