We are in rainy season and spring weather can lead to wet and dangerous driving conditions. We all must pay attention to road conditions to avoid being in an automobile accident. First, pay attention to media reports on the weather and road conditions. Slow down when visibility is impaired and increase your stopping distance between the car in front of you.
Never attempt to drive through standing water on the road. Looks can be deceiving and what you think could be a shallow puddle could be a deep pool or washout that could submerge and disable your car.
In a blinding downpour, pull off the road and wait for the rain to slow. If you can't see the edges of the road or other cars, you are driving blind.
Hydroplaning occurs when a layer of water builds between the road and your tires. This results in a loss of traction, which means you have no control over your car's braking, steering or acceleration.
Follow the Boy Scout motto - Be Prepared! Do a safety check of your car before you head out. Do you have good tread on your tires? Are your wipers working and not worn? Are they streaking?
Keep your windows and headlights clean, never use cruise control in wet driving conditions and keep an eye on your fuel guage.
Drive defensively - you may be careful, but what about that other driver?
