An umbrella insurance policy can provide a great deal of coverage for a fairly nominal cost. I suggest everyone in Kentucky and Indiana talk to their insurance agent about an umbrella policy. However, you need to make sure it also provides Uninsured (UM) and Underinsured (UIM) motorist coverage. I have been in the unfortunate position many times of telling a potential client that the person who hit them either did not have any insurance coverage or minimum limits.

From my personal experience, I know you have to read the application and ask your agent to make sure you have UM/UIM coverage. When I called my personal insurance agent to get an umbrella policy, he had already checked the application for me to waive uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage. If I had not read the application, I would have unknowingly waived this very important coverage.
