The National Highway Traffic Safety Adminstration (NHTSA) reported there were 31,110 fatalities in car crashes through the end of October 2008. This represents an overall decline of 9.8% from 2007. This is the lowest number since the early 1960's.

That is good news - the number of Americans who died in car crashes last year dropped to the lowest level in over four decades.

It is hard to tell what is behind these low numbers. Some traffic safety experts believe it could be due to high gas prices causing people to drive more slowly and maybe spend less time driving.

Some may be surprised that an attorney who makes a living representing injured victims in personal injury claims would think that fewer crishes is good news. But I have always felt one of my responsibilites is injury prevention. One of the purposes of our civil justice system is to promote responsible behavior.
