Fourteen people have died as a result of motorcycle wrecks in Louisville, Kentucky this year. That is a substantial increase from a year ago when Jefferson County had 9 fatalities due to motorcycle accidents. Kentucky State Police have started a motorcycle safety program. The program will focus on motorcyclists and cars sharing the road, sober driving, and older cycle riders.

This is a much needed start to decrease motorcycle accidents. Just review the stats.

Whatever the cause, through July 19, the Kentucky State Police reported that of the 172 motorcycle crashes in Jefferson County, 14 involved fatalities -- already surpassing the total of nine for 2006. And at least two more fatal crashes have occurred since.

Statewide through July 19 there have been 1,025 motorcycle crashes with 57 fatalities, compared with 1,776 crashes and 97 fatalities for all of 2006, according to state police.

Nationally, the number of motorcycle accidents has risen each year since 1997, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
