Most attorneys and chiropractors who represent and treat accident victims are hard working professionals who's first priority is taking of their cleint or paitent. But this story in the Los Angeles Times hurts all of our credibility and public image.

Investigators set up a fake law office and sent 250 letters to medical professionals they already suspected of fraud. They were asking the doctors to pay up to 30% of their billing for referrals. While the number who took the bait was fairly low - 6 chiropractors and an office adminstrator - it is still too many. Five additional suspects - two chiropractors, an attorney and two office administrators - were caught with walk-in stings. Within 30 minutes of a meeting, they agreed to overbilling or fee splitting.

I believe that while insurance fraud does happen, it does not happen as often as insurance companies would have you believe. Sometimes publicity by the insurance industry is designed to prejudice a potential jury pool against auto accident or other injury victims.
